Bulldog Club of Scotland Open Show
Saturday September 29th 2012
Held at The Richard Greenhow Centre, Gretna, Scotland
My grateful thanks to the Committee of the Bulldog Club of Scotland for inviting me to judge their 2012 autumn open show and for the very warm welcome I received on the day. Thanks also to all the exhibitors for giving me such a very nice entry of bulldogs, with a significant number of quality dogs on show. I had a most enjoyable day. The venue was excellent and the ring of good size which enabled me to assess movement easily. As always, I judged the overall virtues of the dogs, rather than their faults, while always bearing in mind the revised KC standard. I trust this reflected in my placings.
BIS was Smith & P Powell’s Carasmels Johnson. RBIS and BOS was Bell’s Belldell Venus Mellowmood and BPIS was Salkeld’s Sodburybull Sunset Beauty At Salkysbully.
MPD (1/1)
PD (7/4)
1 Mr P & Mrs J Livingstone’s Jacobella Rapscallion. A very pleasing 9 month r/w dog that was well schooled and handled expertly in order to show of his virtues. Well up to size, with a very nice head that has good length and width of skull, correct layback, well padded muzzle, correctly placed neat ears and nice dark eyes that were well set and of correct shape. Excellent pigment, straight wide mouth and a good turn of under-jaw with correct lip placement. Full over nose roll but this did not interfere with nose or layback Good front assembly, with strong straight bone leading to neat, cat feet. Body has adequate neck, short back, nice spring of rib, good depth of brisket. Correct roach of back leading to a nice well set tail. Good angulation throughout. Sound movement although pinned slightly in front and this cost him in the challenge for BPIS. BPD.
2 L Soutar & D Blane’s Cholto Alejandro. 9 month old light br/w dog, also well up to size. Pleasing head with good width of skull, neat ears set high and well placed, dark eyes of correct shape. Good mouth, lip placement and pigment. Full over nose roll but well clear of nose, which was large and with wide nostrils. Not the length of muzzle of 1. Clean straight front with strong bone, good pasterns and correct feet. Front just a tad too wide. Good body shape and rear angulation. Longer cast than 1 and therefore not exhibiting the same overall balance as 1. Movement was ok, although ‘crabbed’ a little going away.
3 K Hindle’s Onthebull Mystic Edge.
JD (6/2) This was a strong class with very little to choose between 1 and 2.
1 S Smith & P Powell’s Carasmels Johnson. A dog I have admired from the ringside since he first appeared in minor puppy and I was not disappointed in going over him. A correctly balanced flashy r/w standard size dog of 13 months who has an excellent, clean, brick shaped head with fine wrinkle and a good sour expression. Large open nostrils, good pigment, flat skull, correct length of skull, dark correctly shaped eyes and well set rose ears. Well padded muzzle with correct rounded cheeks, a full over nose roll but this did not interfere with nose or layback. Good turn of under-jaw which was true and of good width. Correct lip placement. This dog has a lovely balanced front, with strong straight bone, strong pasterns, neat cat feet and a good depth of brisket. Good reach of neck leading through to a well shaped body with correct top line, good spring of rib, light hindquarters of good angulation and a good tail, correctly set. Movement was excellent going and coming, as well as in side profile. BD & was awarded BIS as a result of his excellent movement which just edged it over the lovely BB.
2 Mrs M J Peacock’s Coatesmar Crusader. Another very nice dog that I have admired from the ringside. A 14 month, flashy r/w of larger size than 1. Good brick shaped head with a well padded muzzle, good layback, open nostrils, good pigment, nice sweep of under jaw with correct lip placement, lovely dark eyes of correct shape and size, flat skull with fine wrinkle. Good bone and length of fore leg, not so strong in front pastern as 1 but still has correct ‘cat like’ feet, good depth of brisket. Adequate neck, good spring of rib, slightly longer cast than 1, correct topline, excellent angulation to hind quarters and good tail which was set correctly. Good, positive movement.
3 D & A Salkeld’s Salkysbully He’s The Rolls Royce.
ND (2/1)
1 L Soutar & D Blane’s Mellafella The Knockout. A standard size, 21 month old, flashy r/w dog of good type with a pleasing head that has a broad flat skull, good layback, fine wrinkle, clearly defined stop, good pigment, well placed dark eyes, acceptable full nose roll, large nose with good wide nostrils, correct sized ears but could be more ‘settled’. Under-jaw could have a better fit. Good front with adequate straight bone, correct feet, good depth of brisket and the required ‘tacked on ‘shoulders. Adequate neck, slightly long in back, good rear angulation, acceptable roach, good tail set. Moved ok.
PGD (3/2)
1 A Brown’s Merretbull Dream Catcher. A pleasing, 2 year old, white dog with a very good large brick shaped head. Good length and width of skull, fine wrinkle, neat rose ears placed wide and high, dark eyes of correct shape and placement, large nose with wide open nostrils, full but not heavy over nose roll, excellent layback, good true under jaw with correct lip placement. Expression was unfortunately spoilt by lack of pigment to nose and eye rims. Good length of front leg with ample bone, good breadth of chest with correct depth of brisket and strong pasterns leading to correct cat feet. Adequate neck running through to well balanced body with correct roach, tail set and nice spring of rib. Well angulated hind quarters. Moved ok.
LD (5/3)
1 A Nord & N Pratt’s Bokabulls Montgomery. A very pleasing standard size 3 year old flashy r/w dog who is well balanced but could carry a little more weight to complete the overall picture. Very nice head with a lovely sour expression. Good mouth and excellent sweep of under-jaw, correct lip placement, good layback, full over nose roll well clear of good nose and nostrils, nice pigment, well padded muzzle, broad skull of good length, and neat well placed ears. To complete the picture I would have preferred slightly more rounded eyes. Good straight bone to well angulated and balanced front with the required tacked on shoulders, pasterns ok and neat cat feet. Good length of neck, short back, good roach and nice tail correctly set. Adequate spring of rib and well angulated lighter rear end. Moved well.
2 Mrs M J Peacock’s Coatesmar British Steel. 14 month r/w of larger size than 1. Large brick shaped head with broad skull, well placed rose ears, very well padded muzzle, good layback, full over nose roll but this did not interfere with nose, open nostrils, good pigment, dark eyes of correct shape and size. Head wrinkle heavier than 1 but acceptable. Under-jaw was not as good as 1. Excellent front with strong straight bone, good length of fore leg, correct depth of brisket, strong front pasterns, pleasing ‘cat like’ feet. Adequate neck, excellent spring of rib, short cobby body of correct shape, good topline, rear angulation and good tail, which was set correctly. Good, positive movement.
OD (4/2)
1 S Smith & P Powell’s Carasmels Solo. Lovely 3 years old flashy r/w dog who is the older brother to the BIS winner and has many of the same qualities, although significantly larger throughout. Striking brick shaped head with good length of skull and width of fore face, good under jaw and lip placement, nice rose ears well set, correct eye shape and placement. Good length of neck and straight front with fantastic bone, pear shaped body with nice top line, good rear angulation and tail set. Moved well but could not match the positive front movement of his younger brother in the challenge for BD. RBD.
2 A Brown’s Merretbull Dream Catcher. First in PGD.
MPB (1/0)
1 D & A Salkeld’s Sodburybull Sunset Beauty At Salkysbully. A beautiful standard size, feminine, w/r bitch of just 6 months not exaggerated in any way and who should have a bright future if she grows on to meet her current potential. Feminine head with adequate breadth of skull, fine wrinkle, rose ears correctly set, good length of skull and excellent lay back, well padded muzzle, dark pigment, excellent sweep of under-jaw, large black nose with good open nostrils, neat full over nose roll, lovely expressive dark eyes correctly placed and of correct proportion, the whole giving a lovely sour expression. At present has a tendency to show her teeth very slightly but hopefully this will resolve as her head develops and ‘fills’ in. Well balanced front with tacked on shoulders, straight, adequate bone of good length and firm pasterns leading to lovely cat feet. Has a good length of neck running into a short back with correct roach, good spring of rib and correct tail set. Good angulation both front and back. Excellent movement for one so young, both going and coming, and this won her BPB and BPIS against a very nice dog puppy.
Puppy Bitch (3/3)
Junior Bitch (4/0)
There was little to choose between the first three in this class.
1 S & D Lowthian’s Neptunebull Daddy’s Diva At Tyneamite. A standard size r/w bitch, just 2 weeks out of puppy and of excellent type. She has a lovely feminine head with correct sour expression arising from her good width and sweep of under jaw, correct lip placement, expressive correctly shaped dark eyes that are well placed, deep stop, good nose with wide nostrils, full and intense pigment, correct layback, broad flat skull with fine wrinkle and well set thin rose ears. Good length of neck leading to cobby body of excellent shape. Good well balanced front with strong bone of good length and angulation, strong pasterns and correct cat feet. Good depth of brisket, nice spring of rib, short back, nice roach and well set tail. Good rear angulation. Strong positive movement although she pinned a little in front and this cost her in the challenge for BB.
2 Mr T & Mrs L McCash’s Taybull Dylanesque. W/r bitch of 15 months who was of excellent type and had a majority of the same virtues as 1 and was very close up. In the end just lost out on under jaw. Good movement.
3 Mrs J & Mr R M Ferguson’s Neptunebull Uptown Girl At Bulldovie.
Novice Bitch (4/0)
1 Mr T & Mrs L McCash’s Carasmel Scarlet Dixie Taybull. 4 year old standard size r/w of good type who has a pleasing head with good width and length of skull, well padded muzzle, dark well placed eyes, well defined stop, open nostrils and a good true under jaw. Well balanced front with good depth of brisket and enough bone to good feet, strong neck, cobby body, good spring of rib, correct topline and tail set. Good true movement.
2 Mrs J & Mr R M Ferguson’s Neptunebull Uptown Girl At Bulldovie.12 month who was placed third in previous class. Good brick shaped head with excellent length of skull, fine wrinkle, neat rose ears correctly set, very good pigment, dark eyes well set and of good shape, full over nose roll well set back, good open nostrils. Mouth and under jaw ok. Balanced front with adequate and straight bone and good depth of brisket, strong front pasterns, neat cat feet, acceptable spring of rib, good roach and excellent tail that is well set. Moved fine but just lost out ok to 1 on maturity and overall body shape.
3 M Bell’s Belldell Cover Girl.
Postgraduate Bitch (5/0)
1 A Nord & N Pratt’s Myboz Pretty Special Bokabull. A very pleasing, feminine, standard size 6 year old flashy r/w bitch who was of excellent type. In first rate condition and certainly did not show her age. Well balanced throughout with a lovely sour expression. Good width and length of skull, neat rose ears that were well placed, fine wrinkle, expressive eyes of correct shape and well placed, true under jaw with excellent upsweep. Good front with straight bone, strong pasterns, neat feet and good depth of brisket. Good body shape with correct angulation, good roach and well set tail. Moved well and pushed hard for RBB.
2 Mrs M Sharkey’s Maxibulz Willow The Wisp. An 18 month, br/w who was well up to size, of good type and close up to 1. Pleasing brick shaped head of heavier type than 1. Broad skull, good wrinkle, neat rose ears set high and wide, dark eyes well placed, well padded muzzle, clearly defined stop, excellent over nose roll, large black nose, good mouth and lip placement, good sweep of under jaw. Good forefront with strong straight bone and neat feet. Strong neck of good length, nice roach to topline, good tail correctly set and good angulation front and rear. Good depth of brisket and spring of rib. Longer cast than 1 and hind quarters a little heavier so consequently could not match the overall body shape of 1. Movement was good.
3 A Brown’s Merretbull Dream Of Allwyn.
Limit Bitch (2/1)
1 A Brown’s Merrettbull Living Dream. A pleasing 2½ year old w/r bitch who is up to size and well presented. Lovely brick shaped head with wide flat skull and good length, nice layback, well padded muzzle, correctly placed rose ears, dark eyes of excellent shape although lacking a little pigment, well defined stop, full over nose roll well set back from good nose with open nostrils, excellent turn of under jaw and correct lip placement. Well balanced front with good depth of chest, good straight bone and neat cat feet. Strong neck, short back, good spring of rib, topline and well set tail. Muscle tone could be a little firmer but moved well.
Open Bitch (6/2)
1 M Bell’s Belldell Venus Mellowmood. 3 year old, standard size, flashy dark r/w bitch who I have judged before and placed well. Excellent brick shaped head with dark well set eyes of correct shape, rose ears set well between a broad skull of good length, fine wrinkle, round cheeks, deep stop, excellent width and turn of under-jaw, good straight mouth, correct lip placement. Good layback. This bitch has a very well constructed cobby, pear shaped body with excellent bone throughout and correct angulation front and rear. Good spring of rib and correct roach of back leading to well set free moving tail. Moved true but was not quite as positive in front movement as the BD in the challenge for BIS. No hesitation in awarding her BB and RBIS
2 K Hindle’s Onthebull Enchanted Pearl. Very pleasing 2 year old, dark r/w bitch with excellent pigment who was of smaller type than 1 but up to the Standard. Very good head shape with lovely expression, wide flat skull, good layback, neat rose ears, dark eyes that were well set. Over nose roll a little heavy but acceptable. Good width and sweep of under jaw and good lip placement although her dentition did not quite match that of 1. Lovely well balanced body shape with clean straight front, neat feet, good depth of brisket, short back, good spring of rib, correct roach and tail set. Good angulation to front and rear. Moved well and pleased to award her RBB in strong competition.
3 S & D Lowthian’s Tadstun Isabella Of Tynamite.
